Is Your Family Ready if a Fire Happens?

December 20th, 2009

Fire Evacuation Plans can be the difference between life and death.
Deadly fires happen everyday, some by careless practices and others by pure accident. Either way, if you and your family are prepared, you can increase your chance of escape.

Do you have a fire evacuation plan for your family?
It is important to be prepared before a fire starts so that children are ready to take action. Many children know what to do in a school fire drill, but they should also know what to do if a fire breaks out at home. Here are a few suggestions to get you started. The video shown below from WhatHappensNow.com offers a more comprehensive guide.

  • Know where all of the exits are in your home, including windows.
  • Have a safe meeting place for the family to gather outside the home.
  • All family members should know where smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are located in the home.
  • Remind family members not to go back into the house after escaping.
  • Don’t try to save property.
  • Call 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s house.
