Congratulations to Beverly Thompson for receiving the NFPA’s 2010 Fire & Life Safety Educator of the Year Award.  Beverly is a public education specialist with Dekalb County Fire Rescue in Tucker, Georgia.  Some of her community service includes coordinating Fire Prevention Week festivals, conducting fire safety training programs for older adults and introducing the Risk Watch program to 84 schools in the area.

Announcing the Premier Event in Fire and Life Safety

Fire safety news, information, and tips- National fire protection association conference

The 2010 NFPA Conference and Expo will take place June 7-10 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.  The NFPA encourages professionals in fire protection, life safety, electrical, building design & management, fire service and loss prevention to attend the conference.  This year professional can choose from 11  different tracks and over 130 education sessions.

In addition, NFPA is going green for the conference by posting handouts online prior to the event and distributing USB drives during the conference.  You can learn about other green initiatives by visiting the NFPA Conference Blog.

United Spinal Association Offers Fire Safety Training For People With Disabilities

Fire safety news, information, and tips- United Spinal Association online fire safety training program fire escape tips for people with disabilities

The United Spinal Association has developed a free online fire safety training program designed to save the lives of individuals with disabilities and impairments during fire emergencies.

This program was developed after the September 11th tragedy highlighted the need for special evacuation procedures for wheelchair users during an emergency.  According to a press release from the United Spinal Association, this program “focuses on the unique aspects of fire safety for people with disabilities, what to do in case a fire occurs and reviews life safety requirements (i.e., areas of refuge, wide exit stairs, means of egress elevators and exterior areas of assisted rescue) found in the International Building Code.”

Congratulations Don Porth, National Firemark Award Winner

Fire safety news, information, and tips- Don Porth, National Firemark Award Winner

Congratulations to Portland Firefighter Don Porth, winner of the Liberty Mutual National Firemark Award for Public Education and Community Service.  According to a press release, “Porth is being recognized for his 25-year career of putting out fires before they start through education programs for Portland families.”  Over his 25 years in fire service, he has served as firefighter, juvenile firesetter specialist, public education officer and fire inspector.

Selected among 150 nominees, Porth is known for creating the Historic Belmont Safety Learning Center and Fire Museum, chairing the Metro Injury Prevention Coalition and managing SOS Fires (an educational website focused on juvenile fire setting intervention).  Porth will receive a $10,000 grant from Liberty Mutual and “plans to use the grant to support the Jeff Morris Fire and Life Safety Foundation”.  For more information about Don Porth’s award, please visit Portland’s Fire Blog.

Stay Safe With the Earthwise Fire Safety Checklist

We know how important it is to protect your family and home from fire and fire related injuries. That’s why Earthwise, the leading provider of flame retardants, and Fire Safety for All have put together a checklist to help you get started.  Although it’s called the “New Homeowner Fire Safety Checklist”, these tips are a good resource for any family no matter how long they lived in their home.  It’s always good to brush up on fire safety preparedness.

1. Have you created a fire evacuation plan? This plan shows family members how to safely escape any room in the home if a fire occurs.  It should also include a safe meeting meeting place for the family to gather outside. For tips on creating this plan, visit our post on fire evacuation plans.

2. Have  you practiced the fire evacuation plan with your family?

3. Do all bedrooms have easy escape routes via windows with adequate openings?

4. Does every family member know how to unlock all windows in the house in the case of a fire?

5. Do you have smoke detectors installed in strategic locations like hallways, the kitchen and the basement?

6. Have you checked the batteries in every smoke detector in the house?

7. Have you installed carbon monoxide alarms in the house?

8. Have your fireplace and chimney been cleaned and inspected recently?

9. Do you know what to do in the event of a grease fire?

10. Do you have baking soda and a fire extinguisher available in the kitchen?

11. Do you have the phone number of the nearest fire department recorded near all landline phones and in your cell phone?

12. Does your homeowner’s insurance policy include fire coverage?
