Researchers at Victoria University in Melbourne concluded that 78% of school-aged children slept through a smoke alarm blaring for 30 seconds. The study, published this month in the journal Fire and Materials, asked 79 families to trip their smoke alarm after their child had been asleep between one to three hours.
The group of 123 children — the average age was 9 — was split in two according to which children had hit puberty. It was an intentional division: plasma melatonin levels — melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone, helps induce sleep — decrease in conjunction with puberty onset.

On Friday, April 22, people all over the world will join together to celebrate our planet – don’t be left out on the celebrations! Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect about what you are doing to help protect the environment. There are many ways that you can celebrate alone and with others. Here are some ideas:
- Planet a tree. This helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cleans pollution, secures soil in place to prevent erosion, and provides homes for a lot of biodiversity.
- Make nature crafts. For example, build a birdhouse. This will play an important role in every ecosystem.
- Learn and teach others about the environment. Research issues such as pollution, endangered species, water shortages, recycling, and climate change. Teach others as well.
- Reduce, reuse and recycle all day long. Buy as little as possible during this day, and avoid items that cannot be recycled.
- Wear green and/or brown. Think tree and be like one with the environment.
- Cook a special Earth Day meal. Use locally organic produced foods that have minimal impact on the environment.
- Ride your bike or other forms of human powered transportation. This will reduce the amount of air pollution AND save you money at the pump.
We are proud to be an environmentally responsible company, not only by practicing green chemistry, but developing new products that provide fire safety and are eco-friendly. Join in and do you part too. Celebrate Earth Day every day!

About 4.8 million box fans are being recalled by a Pennsylvania company because they pose a fire hazard, the government said. The problem was associated with seven reports of fire — including two house fires and a barn fire — that caused significant property damage, the commission said. No injuries were reported from the fires.

85% of fire fatalities happen in the home. Everyone knows that home fires tend to go up in the colder months, as people use space heaters. But what is the most significant cause of home fire source in the summer months? It is cooking. Leaving paper products close to stoves, leaving stoves or coffee pots on, toasters, grease – there are many potential fire dangers in the kitchen, so take extra precautions around that room. And what is the number one cause of fires deaths in the US? Cigarettes. This usually occurs when ashes fall and ignite something. Candles, lighters, fireplaces and electrical outlets are all places to also be vigilant about fire danger.
